for inviting me down to help with there Under Armour combine at the Georgia Dome on Saturday. You would think that the talent level from the state of Georgia would be high and trust me the players didnt disappoint. I thought the track would be a little slow being indoors and being sports turf similiar to the field at the Charlotte combine. Let me start off by saying I was wrong big time!
See below on Branden Smith
A player that stood out to me was Washington County and Ga Tech commit Brandon Watts. He ran a 4.63 40 and played very well in the one vs one session. He was facing about 270 lb TE and I told him there no way this guy should get off the line. Watts who was outweighed by at least 40 lbs took the TE and drove him at least 5 yds out of bounds. He came back to me and said ” was that good enough?”. I told him that was what I wanted to see.
Another LB that did very well in one on one, also 7 on 7 was Westlake 2010 LB Michael Taylor. Taylor has good size and great hips and feet. He would fit great into the 4-2-5 Tampa 2 scheme that teams are using against the spread teams in college.
A name that alot of folks will hear from in the next 2 years is Rome high RB Reggie Whatley. Whatley ran 4.31 forty on one clock and turned around another 4.31 forty. Although he got beat in one on one vs Smith in front of the whole combine he got his name on the map and that is all it takes. He is small in size but with blazing speed he will find a team to take him in the future.

Yesterday at the Ga Dome I watched a young man run back to back 4.28 and 4.31 40 yd dash. Branden Smith from Atl Booker T.Washington high school and highly sought after CB blistered the Ga Dome turf. Scout.com’s Scott Kennedy turned to me and said “did that look fast to you?” I knew it was and he showed me his clock and it read 4.28. So then we let Chip Smith( who trains the likes of Champ Bailey, Peyton Manning, Urlacher etc) take his turn on the clock and gets him at 4.30 forty. This kid is a WEAPON on the field. I watched him just take the WR’s group and chew them up all day long. Talked with a SEC coach last night and he said he was a top 5 player in the south. I told him I totally agree.
I will do a more in detail story later on tonight but I thought I would share that with you. It created quite a buzz at the dome.

today in Athens. Both Scout and Rivals.com were there on hand. I made a phone call into a person on the scene and it seems Aaron Murray made it be known he is the man right now. His passes were crisp and accurate all day long. Alot of underclassmen were on hand trying to earn offers from UGA. Looks like Rome Ga quarterback Nash Nance( Darlington high school) has come out of nowhere to bust onto the national scene. You would have to think he will put up some big time numbers next year in A ball. Lot of reports will surface over the next few days to who got offers and who didnt. According to Rivals.com recruiting guru Chad Simmons Michael Bowman did not come away with a offer as many UGA fans had hoped.

Sorry Folks I AM BACK!
How bout them Dawgs and Gordon Beckham? That reminded me of watching Jeff Francouer on CSS his last high school game homering in your last 2 at bats. Beckham is a Pollack type kid to me and we may never see anything like him in the red and black in a long time.
Some early TV times have been set with UGA playing SC on CBS at330 and Ala in Athens at 745 ESPN game. Ariz st game is a 8pm eastern time game and gameday will be there I am betting since Herbie will be doing the game. I am hearing some rumors about UGA retiring Pollack’s Jersey at the Bama game. Again that is just some rumors to me, but not in concrete at this point. Pollack is the 2nd best player EVER to play at UGA period.

for having me in Charlotte Saturday for there NC/SC/VA regionally combine. I got a chance to be up close with some of the best in the south
There was over 150 kids there highlighted by North Carolina commit LB Justin Dixon. Dixon who weighed in at 220 lbs and ran a 4.50 forty. Kid is a beast. Forty times were slow but a few kids could fly no matter what and did not disappoint. NC will have their hands full holding on to him as he told me LSU, OK,TN were not letting up.
To me though this combines are about finding the hidden gems. And certaintly a gem was found in Greenwood SC DB Byron Best. On a day when 40 times were hard to break the 4.5 range this kid ran a 4.37. He held his own during the one on one drills also. I ask him if he had any offers and he said ” no sir”. I told him those 40 yards he just ran could be a life changer for him. He and his mother had big bright smiles on there faces.
Another kid who made a name for himself was Dorman SC OT Brandon Thomas. Thomas ran 4.6 and 4.8 back to back at 6′4″ and 279 lbs. Super nice kid and will be a target for many schools as soon as scout post those results.

Spent some time at the Butts Mehre watching film with some UGA staff members. It is very clear that UGA is looking for one thing on offense to surround Murray, Mettenberger or Gray, playmakers. Staff is not only focused on 09 kids but the 2010 kids are already being focused on. Somebody that can “take it to the house” period. That was a direct quote. Pahokee WR Nu’Keese Richardson and 2010 kids Julian Horton and Marcus Jackson from Pepperell High school. Jackson has some ties to UGA with his father playing at UGA in the early80’s as a RB.
Richardson is only 5′8′ but the kid can flat out fly. He reminds me of Bo Carroll that played at Fla or current LSU player Trinton Holiday. This a person that can get the ball in the space and make a play. Will be a weapon on special teams as well
Marcus Jackson will be a hot name in 2010. Jackson is 6ft about 170 and may be the fastest kid in the state. As soon as Jackson’s video was put in the computer a simple “WOW” was repeated by those watching. Physical player and speed you cant coach.
All the above players are on the UGA radar, but you can expect UGA to put the full court press on these “playmakers” in 09 and 10.

Take a Mr Fla in football as a jr and get him to leave the state. Last Mr Fla I can remember leaving the state is Tommie Frazier in 1992. Aaron Murray comes with the records and all the glory of being a big time qb in the state of Fla. Mean time Ga has another qb committed from little ol Watkinsville Ga who plays for Oconee County and didnt even make all state as a JR. Zack Mettenberger
Fla fans back in 2000 had just landed USA TODAY PLAYER OF THE YEAR Brock Berlin. Also on their roster they had a another qb that was a Redshirt freshman from a small town in Indiana that had only a few offers of Fla and Purdue, Indiana and Minnesota. Rex Grossman who was runner up for the Heisman in 2001 then went on to be a NFL first round draft pick and a starting qb in the Super bowl, while Brock Berlin is banking from what I heard. Point being dont be so quick to give Murray the starting job after Logan Gray. Zach Mettenberger will have his opportunity.
